And Another Thing....

Just came across this in my Vienna inbox.  A great Chicago-centric Blog called Gaper's Block has reviews of some new releases from the Chicago jazz scene.

Enjoy...

Gregory, Donna,

I'm a recovering classical musician who wanted to improvise - but not jazz. To make a long story short, I ended up finding a playing partner and in the past seven years have made 3 "classical improv" CDs, teaching a semester class in Improvisation for Classical Musicians, and putting together a book, "Improvisation Games for Classical Musicians" (500+ games for performers, teachers, etc) just published by GIA It should help others work improvisation in to lessons and music curricula - or just give people ideas on how they can invent their own music. I think the key is for classical players to discover their own voices without trying to become jazz musicians - great for some, but doesn't fit most of us because of instrument or inclination.

Jeffrey,
Thanks for the comment and joining the conversation. Kudos to you and your playing partner on your published stuff.

You're right, improvisation too often can have a stylistic dogma attached.

One can improvise outside of the jazz arena as well as in...
